When Malia’s mother was diagnosed with brain cancer, grief entered her life in a profound way. Only later, after losing her mom, many other loved ones, and experiencing grief from other losses, did she begin to understand how a deeper knowledge of grief and of her mediumistic experiences might have changed the way she and her family navigated those years. That realization became part of the reason for writing Why Not? Healing Through Spirit Connection.

Malia’s legal and analytical background never disappeared when she embraced mediumship. It became part of how she approached it. She wanted to understand the research and what ethical practice should look like.

She does not seek to convince people what to believe. She does not suggest that mediumship replaces therapy, medical care, or traditional grief support. She asks whether something potentially meaningful has been left outside the conventional grief conversation:

What if the connection you thought was lost could become the beginning of your healing?

She wants grieving people to become aware of this possibility and have access to spiritual exploration without being asked to surrender their judgment, autonomy, or skepticism. That intersection became the foundation of her work:

Why Not? Healing Through Spirit Connection is more than a book. It is the foundation of the The Continuum of Healing, a developing premier educational and professional community dedicated to reimagining grief care through ethical, evidence-informed mediumship. Its mission is to bridge science, spirit, and professional practice by creating opportunities for grieving people, grief professionals, researchers, and ethical practitioners to learn, experience, deepen, sustain, and gather. Through education, community, and collaboration, The Continuum of Healing seeks to normalize mediumship as a legitimate complement to grief care through elevating professional standards, ethics, and accessibility, and ultimately advocating for mediumship’s future coverage under supplemental healthcare options like flexible spending accounts.

Malia founded The Continuum of Healing around a central idea:

Grief healing is not about “moving on”—it is about restoring connection.

The Continuum seeks to create professionally held spaces in which grief, continuing connection, mediumship, complementary practices, and evidence-informed inquiry can exist together. The work is guided by safety, consent, professional integrity, and the belief that healing does not require self-abandonment or the severing of love.
